You have probably seen blogs and articles galore on Twitter but it is the next biggest craze or is it still in the shadows of big players, MySpace and Facebook.
MySpace was the powerhouse to say about a year ago. Everyone you knew had an account, from your boss to your favorite band to your favorite hang out. It was the king of using social media to advance your brand onto “friends.” With MySpace you can custom design your profile to mirror your website, which is an advantage over any other social media site currently. It was about a year ago that you could go to anyone oh just look me up on MySpace and you would have a million friends from high school, work, past jobs, etc. But slowly I started to notice that my friends signed on less and less and more started to move to the craze of Facebook.
Facebook now seems to be new craze from people who have accounts from your boss to your favorite hang out, but hasn’t caught on with the bands. One downfall of Facebook; if you are in a band is there is no place to search for music. That’s the only upside to MySpace currently. But on Facebook you can post links, which goes a long way with search engine optimization. These links live and breathe on your profile for other friends to find. So get your links on someone’s Facebook account and you’re golden. On MySpace again this is not an option as yet. Yeah you can post a bulletin about the link but that can easily be lost if you have hundreds of friends. Get your links on Facebook or create a groups page, this is the hot spot right now. If you’re not sure your business fits on a social media site then there is nothing wrong with posting your company website on your account. Why not promote where you work on your own profile.
Twitter, another social media site has been in the background since 2006. It really hasn’t hit the mainstream and is kind of very slowly making its way there. It’s basically micro-blogging in fewer than 140 characters only asking the question, “What are you doing.” The purpose is not to get a response but just to let others know what is going on in your life. A quick blurb. Is it the next big craze though? I think it’s a fit for a business 100 percent but not a fit for the customer, and here’s why. For a business you can easy use Twitter for listing new products for sale, new blog posts, new events, or anything that basically can link people back to your site. For the customer, people like to post video, pictures, play application like Mafia Wars, etc… and unless Twitter gets on board with those components I don’t see many people using it.
But who knows social media is a moving target as you’ve seen with MySpace to Facebook. Everyone is on Facebook now and slowly moving off of MySpace. Maybe in 6 months everyone will be catching the Twitter bug. Till then get your links on any of these social media sites and your ranking will benefit in the search engines.
